Proposal: U.S. Department of Empathy

We’re all mixed up, mad as hell. I'm right, you're wrong. Whatever happened to make love, not war? Where have all those old sayings gone?

Would some lone heart still beating

in our cold government please raise

its hand and propose the formation

of a new national Department?

The U.S. Department of Empathy

will invoke the values and ethics of

human decency, doing unto others

in ways that are kind and charitable

and forgiving. This new Department

will not add a single cent to the deficit.

Empathy costs nothing. Office space

will not be required. Empathy works

within each of us. The Department of

Empathy will improve the lives of

millions of people. Empathy is good

for everyone. This bipartisan effort

will include all political persuasions.

Anger and hate will not be welcome.
