There were actual codified rules to Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons that the animators followed. One of them I remember was something like, "Coyote's physical pain must never be shown to be greater than his humiliation at his failure."
Also reminds me of the old Mel Brooks line: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."
